What do you do when fear raises its ugly head?

Most thinking points to “fight or flee.”

A quote that always cracks me up is the acronym for F.E.A.R….”Fear Everything And Run!”

Too few folks mention “freeze.”

So often, when we face change, a challenge or a fear, we freeze. We are the deer in the headlights.

So often, though, the acronym we should remember is F.E.A.R…“False Evidence Appearing Real.”

If we understand that what we are seeing may not be real our fear level goes down. As Herman Melville said, “Ignorance is the parent of fear.”

How do we address the ignorance? With action! Better to DO something…even it it’s wrong. Then, at least, you’ve been pointed the way to doing something else that is usually closer to right.

But, action in a time of FEAR, bravery, is often more scary than the FEAR……unless…we take the thought of James Stephens, “Curiosity will conquer fear even more than bravery will.”

What if we take the position that we are curious about the thing we FEAR? We simply are looking for what makes it fearful. By looking behind the curtain we often find…nothing.

One last thought…and quote…from George R.R. Martin, “Laughter is poison to fear.”

Think about it, the power of fear comes from our ignorance of it…by laughing in the face of fear we lessen the monster and create the one thing fear itself, fears, confidence.
